Off The Beaten Path

Bullet took the lead with his tracking device. “Should be less than a mile from here.”

“Thank God, dude,” Dad said. I could tell he was getting frustrated, but he never let that smile stray too far when he looked at me.

The rain had let up and I trailed behind them, my eyes constantly darting left and right and behind me. I was looking for something but didn’t know what it was. I watched Bullet, trying to read him, to see if he was still thinking about it.

“There’s a spot over there. Can you see it?” Bear said, pointing.

“Well, this says it’s a little further, but it could be off.”

“It IS off!” Dad and Bear said in unison, followed by laughter.

We walked to that spot—a smaller clearing than where we were before, but big enough for a temporary campsite. We all took in the area.

“This has to be it,” Dad said. “Outside of here, the forest is thick. That’s where the hunting is.”

“I think you guys might be right,” Bullet said, looking down at his GPS.

“Good, let’s set up camp here, so we can go out and scout for the real hunt tomorrow. Don’t worry, Benji. Some of us do know what we are doing,” Bear told me with a wink.

We were deep in the middle of nowhere and no one around us that we knew of. It was just us and the forest, but this was the spot we were guided to. Back then, they all had cell phones, but their signals were lost long ago. Our one guiding light was that newly purchased portable satellite GPS.

The rain continued off and on as we set up the campsite. The mood seemed to be better between them since we found our spot. Before I knew it, we put on our fluorescent vests and trekked out to scout the area. From what they were told, elk made their way through this area quite often. It was off the beaten path, but Dad felt it would be perfect for all of us to experience my first hunt in a completely new place. From what I could tell, none of them had been this deep in the forest on foot.

I had no idea what they were doing or looking for. I just followed along closely, keeping up while doing my best to listen and soak in everything I could. As Dad had told me, I was there to learn. We stayed out there most of the day, stopping here and there to listen and look for signs of elk or anything else that might be out there. According to Bullet, we walked a mile in a southeast direction, then straight west for a mile before finally back to our campsite.

The wintery weather wasn’t too cold and thankfully the rain had stopped. We sat around a small fire to go over the game plan for tomorrow.

“We covered three miles and basically made a big triangle to mark where we will hunt,” Bullet said, drawing a map in the dirt with a tree branch.
